Last week we met with the President of the Black Chamber of Commerce of Lake County, Pastor Arthur Gass, as well as Lydia Lewis, a key member of his staff.
Headquartered in Waukegan, The Black Chamber of Commerce offers a program named the "Black Chamber of Commerce pre-Apprenticeship and Training Academy", specifically designed for men and women in Lake County with their high school degrees or equivalent, who want to improve their ability to earn a living.
The Academy has a program for business entrepreneurs, and another program for those who seek to become independent contractors. Participants must demonstrate respect and discipline. And Pastor Gass, a former military man, knows how to instill and command respect.
In return, these future entrepreneurs and contractors receive intensive schooling, professional clothing, assistance with required certifications, montorship opportunities, and job placement assistance.
The program has graducated seventy-five people who now earn a living and contribute to their community. For example, we met graduate Todd Darby who started a high-quality silk screening company, FTD Wear. You can learn more about FTD Wear for yourself by calling 224-399-9697.
The Academy has a waiting list; those with entrepreneurial spirit see it as an opportunity to improve their lives.
This campaign understands the importance of the Academy. The impediments put up by burdensome government regulations, and other hurdles to success, can stifle entrepreneurial spirit. We are running for Congress to give a voice to small business owners and entrepreneurs like the graduates of Pastor Gass' programs.
We encourage you to learn more about the Black Chamber of Commerce of Lake County at www.bccoflakecounty.com. For those of you looking for an organization in our community in which to get involved or support, I encourage you to contact Pastor Gass and his organization. Contractors should inquire about how they can participate in the mentorship program.
