ATTACK: Dan Seals pushed a story to WGN that said the Dold campaign was being investigated by the FEC for filing an amended second quarter report with the FEC.
FACT: WGN portrayed the voter who filed the FEC complaint as a “concerned citizen” and lawyer. In fact, Mary Stowell is an active Democratic partisan who has contributed $268,000 to Democratic candidates, parties and committees. Ms. Stowell is a maxed-out donor to Mr. Seals, yet this was not noted in the story.
FACT: The attorney who was presented as an objective source and was asked to comment, Burt Odelson, has contributed $10,000 to Democratic candidates in Illinois. This was not noted in the story either.
FACT: Bob did file an amended second quarter report with the FEC, which is completely within federal election law and common among campaigns; in fact, Dan Seals has submitted 17 amended FEC reports during his three runs for Congress.
Dan Seals is playing right out of the national Democratic playbook, which says if you can’t win on the issues then attack the person. The FEC story is a classic example. Seals knows he can’t win on the issues that matter most to voters – jobs, the economy, spending and health care – so he is grasping for attacks on Bob.
