Obama State of the Union Could Tread on Illinois Primaries

The Hill, 1/7/10

The new date of President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address could trample on primary day in Illinois.

The White House is reportedly chosing between Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, which happens to be the date of the first primary of 2010 -- in Obama's home state, no less.

And some aren't happy about it.

Businessman Bob Dold, who is running in the GOP primary to replace Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), took the chance to take a shot at the president and score some points with Republican voters.

"The 10th District sits directly in President Obama’s backyard, and of all people, he should know Feb. 2 is Illinois’ Primary Election Day,” Dold said. "Either he’s living and breathing in the Washington bubble and doesn’t realize the significance of the date in Illinois, or he's acting with complete disregard for the Illinois voters.”

There is also a hot Democratic primary in Kirk's district, as well as two key Senate primaries and a GOP race to face Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.).
