The brave men and women of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard and National Guardsmen are essential in preserving our freedoms. Today, a new generation of veterans are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and joining the aging population of veterans from 20th Century conflicts. Every veteran, regardless of age or length of service, deserves our attention to ensure they have the support and care they need.
The North Shore VA Medical Center, located in the 10th District, is a critical component in the health care system for veterans. Congressman Mark Kirk was instrumental in keeping this Medical Center open and thriving, and I am committed to continuing this leadership to ensure local veterans have access to quality health care.
Additionally, there are several organizations in the district doing important work in helping new veterans re-assimilate into society. Salute, Inc is one such group, which identifies veterans in need of assistance and guides them through a care process, raising money to fund their efforts and the care of soldiers. Semper Fi Fund helps veterans from the Marine Corps in much the same way.
I am working with organizations like these to ensure that veterans and their families are honored for their service and given the care and assistance needed to resume their lives at home. I support the Caregiver Act which was an important step in ensuring access to health care for veterans and providing counseling services and additional resources for family members. The demand for services will only increase as we continue fighting two wars, and we must work to ensure adequate federal funding so that veterans are given the health care and assistance they need.
